‘Boycott Bollywood Happened Largely After The Passing Of Sushant Singh Rajput’: Says Madhur Bhandarkar
Ever since the untimely passing of Sushant Singh Rajput, netizens have started trending the hashtag boycott Bollywood on social media. While the reason behind his suicide is yet to be determined, it left the fans broken-hearted and instances how he was treated like an outsider in the entertainment industry became glaringly clear. Now almost three years after his suicide, the internet is still awaiting justice as they trend #BoycottBollywood for every movie that is announced. Ace-filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar has now spoken about the same.

During his recent interaction on Maniesh Paul’s podcast, Bhandarkar spoke about the social media trend of netizens boycotting Bollywood movies and how it happened after SSR’s suicide. Calling the entire thing a phase, he spoke about how people who want to watch movies will go to the theatres irrespective of the trend. The 54-year-old director went on to explain how the trend happened after Sushant’s demise. Quoted by DNA, he said, “I have noticed that this (boycott) happened largely after the passing of Sushant Singh Rajput. Maybe the industry ignored him. He was from a non-film background and he came and he struggled. It was a very unfortunate, untimely demise and from there, the anger amid the public got aggravated. For the unversed, after the late actor was found hanging in his apartment, in June 2020. His then girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty came under the scanner. She was criticized, ridiculed and blamed for SSR’s death. She along with six others, including her brother, were accused of abetting his suicide. SSR’s case is being probed by CBI but no closure report has been filed yet.
